It’s Gotten Personal in California

ACLU LGBT Project Senior Strategist Robert Nakatani looks at how anti-marriage activists in California are all up in an uproar over our work there

Proposition 8 on the November California ballot seeks to amend the state constitution to deprive same-sex couples of the recently-obtained freedom to marry, but our opponents are making it about us – the ACLU.

When they learned that the ACLU had teamed up with a visionary New York philanthropist to donate $1.2 million to No on 8, our opposition launched a campaign to raise an equivalent amount to support Prop 8 and “stop the ACLU.”

They’ve asked thousands of their supporters for “urgent contributions” to stop the ACLU “and their radical vision for a society dictated to by activist judges.” “The ACLU,” they contend, “is notorious for undermining religious liberty, supporting the legalization of heroin . . . and working to water down laws against sex offenders . . . [a]nd now, for being the #1 sponsor of a campaign to overturn the institution of marriage.”

We should all fight back against this demonization of the ACLU by making a contribution to the No on 8, Equality for All Campaign. This lets everyone know that you’re proud of the ACLU’s vigorous opposition to Prop 8 and to anyone’s attempt to take away the freedom of anyone.
